Nonimmigrant Visas

Important Notice Regarding Visa Processing

Visa Appointments:

High demand for visas during peak travel time and the need to take additional steps to ensure the safety of the traveling public is likely to result in periodic increases in the wait time for visa appointments. The information below is updated on a weekly basis.

  • Typical length of time to obtain an interview appointment for a visitor (B1/B2) visa: click here.
  • Typical length of time to obtain an interview appointment for a student (F, M) or exchange visitor (J) visa: click here.
  • Typical length of time to obtain an interview appointment for all other categories of nonimmigrant visas: click here.

Visa Processing:

Applicants may apply for nonimmigrant visas at the Consulate after arranging an interview appointment with VFS, our off-site interview appointment scheduler. Applicants should visit http://www.vfs-usa.co.in for more information.

All inquiries regarding the scheduling of appointments should be addressed to VFS. You can email VFS at infousmumbai@vfshelplinecom or call:

(022) 6654 7600

Once the visa is approved, it takes 2-3 business days to receive your passport with visa via courier. Some applications, however, may require additional processing that could delay visa issuance for an extended period of time. The applicant will be notified if this is applicable in his or her case.

All U.S. consular sections in India are working to ensure that appointment wait times are kept to a minimum. Persons anticipating traveling to the United States are encouraged to apply early.

The American Consulate in Mumbai has set aside a small number of appointment slots for emergency applications involving humanitarian or medical emergencies and certain unforeseen business-related emergencies. We regret we cannot make emergency appointments for weddings or graduations, to begin temporary employment in the United States, or for other foreseeable events. Please visit the VFS website for more information on emergency scheduling of appointments.
