Religious worker visas: R1/R2 Visas

What documents do I need to apply for an R1 visa?

  • All the documents required for a nonimmigrant visa; Plus:
  • All R1 visa applicants must prove that they are working as a minister of religion, or in a religious vocation or occupation, for a bona-fide, nonprofit religious organization or denomination that is exempt from taxation;
  • Proof that you have been a member of the religious organization for at least two years prior to your application;
  • A contract from the employer in the U.S and proof, such as bank statements, that the employer is able to support the applicant above the poverty line;
  • Recommendation letters to further support the case of the religious worker;
  • IRS-supplied proof of the tax-exempt status of the religious organization in the U.S.;
  • Evidence that you are qualified for the work designated in the U.S.; and
  • Documents showing arrangements for financial support

Applicants applying for R2 visas (Spouse and children of religious workers) must provide the following additional documentation:

  • Marriage registration certificate, and an original birth certificate for each child;
  • Wedding invitation and wedding ceremony photos – at least 5 and no more than 10 of each;
  • A good quality photocopy or the original of their spouse's passport – all 36 pages. The copy of the passport submitted should be a clear copy and the photo must be clearly identifiable;
  • Documents showing arrangements for financial support for the entire family; and
  • The copy of the contract between the employer and the employee in the U.S

All applicants applying for R1 or R2 visas must schedule a personal interview at the Consulate. For more information on how to schedule an interview, please see the VFS website. Families should schedule appointments for all family members together in the same slot.
