Children’s Concert Remembers Death of Journalist Daniel Pearl at Hands of Terrorists

October 18, 2006

New Delhi – Student musicians from some of New Delhi’s leading schools performed at the American Center today as part of a global network of concerts in memory of the life of American journalist Daniel Pearl who was abducted and killed in Pakistan by Al Qaeda terrorists in 2002, just four months after 9/11.

“Harmony for Humanity” is part of the Fifth Annual Daniel Pearl Music Days Observance being held around the world to commemorate the memory of the Wall Street Journal reporter and demonstrate solidarity against terrorism.

In his welcome remarks, Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer Clayton Bond said, “I hope that through this event people will understand the potential of music to promote cross-cultural understanding in the face of the hatred and intolerance.” Mr. Peter Wonnacott, Senior Correspondent for South Asia at the Wall Street Journal, also spoke at the function.

Highlighting key moments in the life of Daniel Pearl and his tragic death at the hands of terrorists, students from Amity International, Sanskriti School and the Vasant Valley School were shown excerpts of the movie “The Journalist and the Jehadi” directed by Ramesh Sharma.

The 20 member Vasant Valley School Band played several songs, including “One Love” by Bob Marley and “Under the Same Sun” from the Scorpions.

The Daniel Pearl Foundation organizes annual Music Days events and invites music, lyrics, poems and articles as contributions. More information on the Daniel Pearl Foundation is available at http://www.danielpearl.org/
