USAID SUPPORTS THE DEVELOPMENT OF
INDIA'S HEALTH INSURANCE MARKET

May 5, 2008

NEW DELHI - "Making Health Insurance Work for the Poor," a two-day conference organized by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) began today at Taj Mahal Hotel in New Delhi.  Indian policy makers, health insurance and health care providers, microfinance institutions, NGO leaders and other stakeholders will discuss development of successful health insurance programs with a special focus on providing health care for the poor.

"Innovative health insurance programs not only provide timely and affordable healthcare to poor households but also protect them from financially catastrophic health expenses," said George Deikun, USAID India Mission Director during his remarks at the conference.

C.S. Rao, Chairman, Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority announced the release of USAID report "India's Private Health Insurance Market: Promise and Reality."  The report analyzes key forces shaping the health insurance sector, and provides recommendations for an inclusive and sustainable health insurance market in India.
