U.S. Consul General Inaugurates America Days
February 4, 2008
Indore – U.S. Consul General Michael S. Owen inaugurated “America Days”—a three-day event highlighting United States culture, traditions, politics, and education—at the Devi Ahilya University Auditorium the evening of February 4th. America Days exhibits, performances, discussions, and film screenings are a joint initiative of the American Center, the educational, cultural and media branch of the U.S. Consulate General, Mumbai, together with Devi Ahilya University and Holkar Science College. Vice Chancellor of Devi Ahilya University, Dr. Bhagirath Prasad, inaugurated the event with the Consul General, and they were joined on the dais by Mr. Vivek Agarwal, Collector, Indore and Dr. Narendra Dhakkad, Principal, Holkar Science College.
The Consul General noted in his remarks the unprecedented opportunities for U.S.-India cooperation in the current environment, where technology, communications, and educational exchange draw the people of our countries closer than ever before. Understanding each others’ cultures, values, and heritage forms the foundation of the U.S.-India relationship, and America Days 2008 brings to the people of Indore an opportunity for first-hand interaction with Americans and our culture, as well as dialogue on the economic, environmental, and social challenges of our day.
The Inauguration was followed by a flute recital by American musician Steve Gorn, accompanied by Pandit Balkrishna Iyer. Gorn’s performance captured the essence of classical Indian tradition along with a more contemporary, western sensibility. Trained in jazz, he became interested in Indian music early in his career and has studied under noted bansuri masters in India.
“America Days” will offer the people of Indore a window to the United States through a variety of different programs and events. In the three day period, more than 25 lectures on topics ranging from English language learning skills, intellectual property rights (IPR), business and management, women’s issues, U.S.-Indo relations, good governance, English literature, U.S. visas and higher education in the U.S., and sustainable development will occur, along with film screenings and discussions.
A special display of American Library books, periodicals, videos, and DVDs will be open to the public from 10 am - 7 pm on February 4-6, 2008 at Yashwant Hall. In addition to perusing the books, periodicals, videos and DVDs, attendees can view a poster show highlighting U.S.-India relations or watch a film screening. For students interested in studying in the United States, a United States Education Foundation in India (USEFI) representative will be on hand to provide information and answer questions.
Entry to all “America Days” programs is free and open to the public. Yashwant Hall will be open from 10:00 am – 7:00 pm on February 4-6. A schedule of events can be found at http://mumbai.usconsulate.gov/indore.html or can be picked up at Yashwant Hall during its opening hours.
