  • Mumbai's Public Affairs Section organized a two-day program for two workshops and three concerts with New York-based DJ Eddie Stats on November 21 and 22, 2005.  Workshops and concerts were held at the Xavier Institute of Commuincations (XLC) and at Don Bosco Boy's Secondary School (DBS) in Mumbai.

  • Public Affairs Section, Mumbai organized a series of programs for David Liebersbach, Director of the Alaska Division of the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management in Mumbai (November 16-18, 2005) and in Baroda (December 4-6, 2005)

  • On October 4, 2005, the Mumbai Consulate General’s Public Affairs Section facilitated a community relations (COMREL) project in Panjim, Goa, for sailors from the visiting Exercise Malabar 2005 ships USS Higgins and USS Santa Fé.  The volunteers painted the large multipurpose hall at Bal Bhavan (“children’s home” in Hindi), a major state-funded project providing free alternate education and skills in creative/performing arts, and science and physical education to approximately 1500 children, including those from rural and low-income families.

  • “Exercise Malabar 05” once again helped to highlight the growing friendship and constructive engagement between the U.S. Navy and the Indian Navy and the vibrant cooperation between the two biggest democracies.

  • On September 26, 2005 Chargé d'Affaires Robert Blake attended the CII's Open Skies Conference in Mumbai. The Chargé hailed the historic U.S.-India Open Skies Agreement, signed in April 2005, as a landmark event in U.S.-India relations, and noted that the U.S. has proposed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Federal Aviation Administration and the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation, which will be an appropriate follow-up to the Open Skies Agreement.  In Indian federal Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel’s subsequent speech, he expressed his gratitude to the U.S. Government for actively promoting U.S.-India aviation cooperation.

  • Consulate General Mumbai’s Public Affairs Section hosted CultureConnect Ambassador Debbie Allen for three days, from September 12-14, 2005. With the able assistance of her academy’s dance masters Terry Beeman and Ava Bernstein, Allen taught young and very talented aspiring dancers, all between the ages of 5 and 25, the importance of rhythmic movement, adaptation, speed, coordination and above all will power in becoming a professional dancer.  Shiamak Davar and his students also honored her with “A Tribute to Debbie Allen” -- a dazzling series of performances that included several Bollywood dance.(September 12-14, 2005)

  • On September 10, 2005, Public Affairs Office Director Linda Cheatham inaugurated the first SA/PPD-funded ACCESS micro-scholarship English-language program at the Himatnagar branch of the Society for Promotion of Rational Thinking (SPRAT), an NGO working to promote communal harmony in Gujarat.  SPRAT, which has six branches in different parts of Gujarat, has been awarded a grant to teach English to 150 underprivileged children, majority of whom are Muslims.  A predominantly Muslim town, Himatnagar is located around 90 kms. away from Ahmedabad near the Gujarat-Rajasthan border.

  • The American Corner at the Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA) launched three days of first-anniversary celebrations with a formal anniversary ceremony held at the AMA hall in the presense of U.S. Consul General, Michael S. Owen and Mr. Mahendra Patel, President of AMA. The American Corner provides a window to the U.S. for the residents of Ahmedabad by making available to them accurate and up-to-date information and also serves as a public platform for screening of videos and films, book discussions,  programs by US experts and orientation sessions for students. The American Corner anniversary program was jointly hosted by the American Center, Mumbai and AMA. (Ahmedabad, September 8, 2005)

  • On August 26, 2005, U.S. Consul General Michael Owen inaugurated the ECA-sponsored photo exhibition “American Roadside Architecture” at Mumbai’s Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies. The exhibit contained 58 photographs by American architectural historian John Margolies as illustrative of American creativity, innovation, humor and, above all, commitment to individuality and personal freedom.(August 26, 2005).

  • U.S. Embassy Chargé D' Affaires Robert O. Blake delivers a keynote address on "Workplace Interventions for the Prevention of HIV/AIDS" at a meeting of corporate leaders organized by the USAID-supported AVERT society in cooperation with the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Indian Association of Occupation Health in Mumbai on Friday, July 8, 2005, Occupational Health Day.     U.S. Speaker Graham Johnson, Chairman of The International Council on Government Ethics Laws was programmed on "Transparency and Accountabilty in Governance" in Bhopal, Mumbai, and Pune.

  • Cultural Ambassador Daniel Libeskind in Mumbai(October 14-15, 2004)
    Daniel Libeskind delivered lectures on his award-winning designs, at the Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute of Architecture and Environmental Studies, and Rachana Sansad's Academy of Architecture.

  • Sailors from Exercise Malabar 2004 ships USS Cowpens, USS Gary, and USS Alexandria painted classrooms and playground equipment of the Nanu Nagle School, and donated items such as sewing machines, textiles, books. Established in 1981, the Nanu Nagle School provides education to approximately 230 children, most from marginalized, low-income families, a large number who whom work as migrant laborers in Goa.

  • Cultural Envoys Omari Faulker and Courtland Freeman in Mumbai (October 8-9, 2004)
    The envoys conducted three basketball clinics for over 250 high school and college students, coaches, and select members of the Indian Railway's women's national basketball team.

  • Exercise Malabar (October 1-11, 2004)
    More than 750 U.S. Navy personnel took part in Exercise Malabar, a bilateral U.S. Navy-Indian Navy training exercise October 1-11, 2004, off the southwest coast of India and conducted related port visits in conjunction with the at sea maneuvers. The U.S. Navy was represented by the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Cowpens (CG 63), the Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided missile frigate USS Gary (FFG 51), the Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Alexandria (SSN 757), and P-3C maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft.

    The American Center organized five "Celebration of Friendship" concerts for the dynamic eight-piece contemporary music ensemble "Tsunami" in Mumbai and Goa.
