The Indian legal system is based on English common law, as modified by legislation. Lawyer referral services, if required, may be obtained from the Bar Associations at the District Courts or the Bar Councils at the High Courts in the State capitals.

Credit reports of commercial firms located in the consular district may be obtained from various local banks and commercial reporting agencies. Citibank, Bank of America, American Express Bank, Chase Manhattan Bank, Banker's Trust Company and Bank of New York have offices in Mumbai.
