Immigrant Visas

Preparing for the Interview

All applicants for immigrant visas must appear in person at the Consular Section for an interview.  Prior to the scheduling of an interview, the NVC or the Consular Section will send a packet of information instructing the applicant to gather the documents that will be necessary for the interview.  All applicants must submit certain personal documents such as passports, birth certificates, police certificates, and other civil documents, and evidence that they will not become a public charge in the U.S. at the time of applying for a visa.  When your case arrives at the Consular Section, and your priority date is current, you will be scheduled for an interview.  If you cannot make this appointment, or you know your documents will be incomplete, please notify the Consular Section right away to be rescheduled.

By email at: MUMBAIIV@state.gov

When we send you an appointment letter we will also send you Information for Immigrant Visa Applicants.  Prior to the interview, all immigrant visa applicants (regardless of age) must undergo a medical examination by a doctor designated by the Embassy or Consulate.  Only authorized doctors may complete this examination.  The list of panel physician (is in the medical examination link above) authorized by the Embassy is included in the Appointment Package for Immigrant Visa Applicants.  Please see Visa Forms & Packets for more information.

The Courier system for Immigrant Visas

With effect from December 1, 2005, applicants who have been scheduled for interviews on and after December 1, 2005, will not need to return to the Consulate to collect their passports and visas.  The passports and visas will be returned, promptly, by courier, to the address specified by the applicant.

The fee for this service is Rs.394 per applicant and should be paid in cash at the VFS offices situated in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune and Kolkata.  The courier fee must be paid prior to the applicant coming to our office for the visa interview.

It is very important to contact the VFS office as soon as you receive the Consulate’s appointment letter.  The VFS offices are open from 08:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 02:00 to 03:00 p.m. on all U.S. Consulate work days.  If there is more than one applicant in a family, one of them can go to the VFS office to pay the total courier fees.  The VFS customer service representatives are trained and know the documents required by our office.  All applicants’ passports must be presented at VFS, and we suggest that you take your other documents with you as well since the customer service representatives are trained to help you organize your papers for the interview.
