Immigrant Visas

General Information

Welcome to our immigrant visa information page!

Immigrant visas are for persons who plan to live, work or study and remain permanently in the U.S. Immigrant visas (IV) are a responsibility of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs. Most IVs require an underlying petition approved by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Citizenship and Immigration Services (US CIS) before any IV processing starts. If you are seeking information on a visa other than an immigrant visa, such as visas for a short-term stay in the U.S. to vacation, conduct business, study or the like, please see our information regarding nonimmigrant visas.

The Immigrant Visa Unit processes visas from 8:00 a. m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. New IV applicants are seen by appointment only. If you have been asked to return in person, you must come at 8:30 am with your passport(s) and any other documents requested from you. The Consulate is closed to the public on both U.S. and Indian holidays, and its visa units are closed on the second and last Friday of every month.

We accept IV inquiries by email at: MUMBAIIV@state.gov
