U.S. Jazz Artists at the Gateway of India
On January 16, 2005, American Consulate General Mumbai’s Public Affairs Section, in conjunction with BET-Jazz and MTV India, presented the first-ever India Jazz and Heritage Tour concert at the historic Gateway of India, Mumbai. Jazz legends Al Jarreau, George Duke, Earl Klugh, and Ravi Coltrane, backed by well-known Mumbai musicians, enthralled the SRO crowd of jazz enthusiasts with two hours of non-stop jazz at its best. In opening remarks scripted largely by Public Affairs Section, MTV’s emcee for the concert noted that the American jazz greats were touring to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and had already visited a Mumbai shelter for HIV/AIDS-affected women and children, and quoted Secretary of State Colin Powell’s December 14, 2005, statement that “Music, especially jazz music, has the power to lift the human spirit in its quest to overcome adversity.”
Earlier, on January 14, 2005, Al Jarreau and George Duke used their celebrity to highlight the dangers of HIV/AIDS in India while visiting the shelter for Dancing Feat, a troupe of HIV-affected children who express hope through dance
