Immigrant Visas
Frequently Asked Questions - Immigrant Visa Unit
Can’t I file a petition for my relative at your office in Mumbai?
Unfortunately, we do not have the authority to accept any Immigrant Visa petitions in Mumbai. Petitions can be filed at the USCIS of the DHS at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi. Currently, U.S. citizens who wish to file an I-130 (Petition for Alien Relative) for their immediate relatives must provide evidence that they have resided in India for a minimum of six months, prior to filing the petition. Proof of such residency will include a U.S. passport containing exit and entry stamps.
U.S. citizens who reside in India may be able to file an I-130 petition with the USCIS office in New Delhi. The U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai does not have the authority to accept any Immigrant Visa petitions. For more information, click here. Approved petitions of applicants who live in Mumbai’s consular district are then processed in Mumbai. For more information, contact USCIS New Delhi. Their address is Shanti Path, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi 110 021, their telephone number is 91-11-2419-8506/8154/8639, their e-mail address is ins.ndi@dhs.gov and their website is http://newdelhi.usembassy.gov/citizenship_and_immigration_services.html. Petitioners who do not meet these criteria or who seek to file I-129 or I-140 petitions must do so in the United States.
