The American Library

Enrollment

Institutional Enrollment

The American Library offers institutional membership to organizations throughout Western India (including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Goa), that includes the following privileges:

Access to the American Library reading room and reference collection for up to five authorized employees of the institution at any given time;

Access to the American Library CD-ROM databases, on-line search services, and document delivery services;

Five (5) borrowers’ cards issued in the name of the institution against which a total of twenty (20) books may be borrowed for a period of three weeks (one month in the case of outstation members);

Ability to borrow five (5) videocassettes at one time for a week; and A free copy of the following the American Library publications: Book Alert, which is a listing of recent additions to the collections of all the American Libraries in India; Article and Web Alert, which is a digest of current articles on different aspects of American society and global issues; up to five article reprints mailed free of charge on request; SPAN; the Union List of Serials available in the American Libraries in India on selected subjects; and complete catalog of our video holdings.

The service charge for non-profit organizations is Rs.2,000/- per annum or Rs.3,000/- for two years and for other organizations is Rs.4,000/- per annum or Rs.7,000/- for two years, payable either by cash or demand draft in favor of the American Consulate General, Mumbai. Completed applications can be returned to our office on any working day between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Institutions should authorize two persons who will be responsible for handling the American Library membership on their behalf and for ensuring that the American Library rules and regulations are adhered to. The institution is responsible for all items issued to it, and for ensuring that the borrowers’ cards and the American Library materials are handled with care, and returned on time. Videocassettes must be returned fully rewound and properly packed, by courier or by hand delivery. Copying of videocassettes is expressly prohibited. It is also incumbent on the institution to keep its members informed of the membership responsibilities detailed above.

Individual Enrollment

Any adult resident of Mumbai (18 years and above) can obtain membership by presenting appropriate identification documents with a photograph and residential address in Mumbai (driving license, passport, official ID card, etc.). Students must produce their current year’s identity card. The applicant is given a borrower’s card on completing the application form and paying the current service charge (non-refundable) of Rs.400/- per annum or Rs.700/- for two years. The amount may be paid by cash or demand draft in favor of the American Consulate General, Mumbai. Members are expected to present the borrower’s card when visiting the American Library. Patrons who wish to use the library for a short period may make use of its services, except borrowing privileges and internet service are not extended to such patrons.
