U.S. Consulate General Program Aims to Combat Violence Against Women
November 29, 2007
U.S. Consul General Michael S. Owen inaugurated the “Combating Violence Against Women” symposium, held in association with the Mumbai chapter of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), on November 29 at the American Center auditorium. The full-day event, which included a dramatic performance as well as self-defense workshop for women, was part of worldwide U.S. efforts to raise awareness about the problem of violence and harassment faced by women at home and at workplace.
Under the theme of “Empowering Minds and Bodies,” PAS Mumbai hosted 140 students and faculty from ten colleges in Mumbai as part of the “Sixteen Days of Violence against Women” campaign. The American Center program meeting included remarks from Consul General Owen, an overview of American laws and best practices, two artistic presentations, and a panel discussion on India’s legal approach to sexual harassment and gender violence, including a discussion of resources for students and communities. A 3-hour hands-on self-defense workshop led by master karate Arvind Khaire concluded the workshop. Click here for Mumbai Press Release
