January 8, 2008
On January 8, 2008, Consul General Michael S. Owen inaugurated a medical camp run by the Shree Bidada Sarvodaya Trust in Bidada village, Kutch. 2008 marked the eighteenth year that the U.S. Consul General in Mumbai inaugurated the yearly, three-week camp that treats more than 30,000 patients free-of-charge. In addition to presiding over the inauguration, the Consul General and his wife toured the camp and worked alongside other volunteers. The Consul General was as impressed with the camp at this year’s inauguration as he was when he first observed its operations in January 2005. “The dedication and spirit of the volunteers is amazing. I have personally witnessed the tremendous impact that the camp and its skilled doctors and personnel have on the lives of the patients. I have seen lives dramatically improved by the medical attention received at this camp. It is living proof of the transformative effect of volunteerism,” Owen said. (Press Release)
