U.S. Consulate General Honors Leaders Involved in the Fight Against AIDS
December 1, 2007

The U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai, in association with All India Association of Industries (AIAI), honored leaders from various fields for their contribution to the fight against HIV/AIDS on the occasion of World AIDS Day on December 1, 2007. A special piano recital by New York-based classical pianist Hsia-Jung Chang was organized on the Consulate lawn in appreciation of their courage and commitment. With the theme of this year's World AIDS Day being leadership, Consul General Michael S. Owen said that the U.S. Consulate General was very proud to honor local leaders who have invested their time, talent, and resources in the fight against HIV/AIDS. “Thanks to their efforts, mothers have been able to avoid passing the disease on to their children, victims have been given hope, and schools and workplaces have been able to teach their students and employees that victims need support, not ostracism," Owen said in his introductory remarks.
The U.S. Consul General also inaugurated a photo exhibition, "Photos of Hope: Lives Saved and Transformed by HIV Treatment," which highlights the struggle of people infected with HIV/AIDS in overcoming fear, uncertainty, stigma, discrimination, and sickness associated with it. The exhibition will be open to the public at the American Center Library from December 10-21 (10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on weekdays).
